Zhenjiang vs Zhanjiang for Sulphur Cargoes

Why one letter changes the discharge geography, inland route and commercial requirement for a sulphur cargo into China.

Last reviewed

Zhenjiang and Zhanjiang are different Chinese ports in different provinces. Treating the names as interchangeable can invalidate a freight comparison, seller offer, LOI, or SPA.

Zhenjiang: Jiangsu and the lower Yangtze system

Zhenjiang is in Jiangsu Province on the Yangtze River system. The official maritime profile describes a jurisdiction with multiple port areas, river channels, commercial berths, hazardous-chemical berths, anchorages, and inland-waterway interfaces.

For a sulphur requirement, that means the buyer must identify the exact terminal or receiving facility, river-access constraints, parcel size, draft limits, transshipment assumptions, discharge rate, storage plan, and inland destination. “CIF Zhenjiang” does not answer those questions by itself.

Zhanjiang: Guangdong and the South China coast

Zhanjiang is a coastal port city in Guangdong Province, facing the South China Sea and connected to South and Southwest China. Its port and shipping policy is administered through Zhanjiang’s municipal transportation authorities.

A Zhanjiang requirement therefore belongs to a different ocean route and inland market. Freight, vessel suitability, weather exposure, discharge infrastructure, storage, and onward movement must be priced for that exact destination.

The minimum port confirmation

Before asking a seller for CFR or CIF, obtain:

  • the port name in English and Chinese;
  • province and UN/LOCODE if the buyer uses one;
  • receiving terminal or nominated berth;
  • maximum parcel and vessel restrictions;
  • discharge rate and who bears demurrage;
  • bulk or bagged acceptance;
  • storage and import arrangements;
  • final inland destination;
  • required delivery window.

Why the error propagates

A one-letter error changes more than the address. It can change the voyage distance, vessel plan, port charges, river or coastal access, delivery schedule, insurance assumptions, and buyer entity involved. If the wrong port appears in an LOI, every later commercial document inherits the wrong requirement.

The correct practice is simple: spell out the city, province, terminal, and delivery basis in the first requirement sheet. Do not let an intermediary “fix it later” after freight has already been quoted.

What GMC asks for

For either destination, GMC needs one buyer-side requirement that fixes the product specification, quantity, packing, port, terminal context, delivery window, Incoterm, and proposed payment approach. That gives a seller one coherent question and prevents parallel quotations on incompatible bases.

Are Zhenjiang and Zhanjiang the same port?

No. Zhenjiang is in Jiangsu on the Yangtze system. Zhanjiang is in Guangdong on the South China coast. A quotation for one is not a quotation for the other.

What is the fastest way to prevent the error?

Write the English name, Chinese name, province, terminal and intended delivery basis in the buyer requirement. If the buyer cannot name the terminal yet, state that it is pending and do not request a final freight number.

An LOI starts the documentary trail. A wrong port then flows into the FCO, SPA, freight request, inspection planning and LC draft. Use the buyer qualification page to fix the complete requirement before seller outreach.
